Geoff and his friends are in Phocaea, a faraway asteroid colony on the Solar System's frontier. They're your basic high-spirited adults, enjoying such pastimes as hacking subject compilers to create dancing skeletons that prance through the low-gee communal areas, using their rocket-bikes to salvage methane ice shrapnel that flies away when the colony brings in a large (and vital) rock and roll of the products, and figuring out how to prevent the ubiquitous monitoring motes that will be the million eye of 'Stroiders, a reality-TV show whose Earthside manufacturers have paid handsomely for the privilege of spying on every details of the Phocaeans' lives. Life isn't as effective as it seems, though. A secret action of sabotage kills Geoff's sibling, Carl, and puts the complete colony at risk. And promptly, we find that the whole lot might have been grilled up by the Martian mafia, as a means of performing a coup and turning Phocaea into a client-state. As though that wasn't bad enough, which rogue AI that was spawned during the industrial crisis and slipped through the distracted safeguards, and a giant X-factor by means of the Viridians, a transhumanist cult that lives in Phocaea's bowels. Furthermore to Geoff, our story revolves around Jane, the colony's resource director - a bureaucrat engineer responsible for keeping the plumbing related running by using an man-made island of mankind poised on the knife-edge of hard vacuum and unforgiving space. She's greater than a century old, and proficient at her job, but she actually is torn between the technical demands of the colony and the politics realities of her situation, in which the fishbowl effect of 'Stroiders is compounded by a reputation economy that turns everyone into a beauty-contest competition. Her maneuverings to keep politics and engineering in harmony will be the center of the reserve.
