The World Place Free is a novel released in 1914 by H. G. Wells. The booklet is considered a prophetical novel foretelling the advent of nuclear weaponry. A frequent theme in Wells' work, such as his 1901 nonfiction booklet Anticipations, was the role of energy and scientific move forward as a determinant of individuals progress. The novel starts with this: "The storyplot of mankind is the annals of the attainment of exterior ability. Man is the tool-using, fire-making pet animal." Researchers of the day were well aware that the slow-moving natural radioactive decay of elements like radium persists for thousands of years, which while the rate of energy release is negligible, the total amount released is huge. Wells used this as the basis for his account.
