The Pupil is a great tale from James' middle period. Pemberton, a young American with an Oxford education and but little money, requires a job tutoring Morgan Moreen, the 12-season old son of an American couple moving into Europe in a method above their income. The category of the pupil is both comic and unfortunate, and the kid himself is vividly attracted. The pupil's parents waffle about paying Pemberton the salary to which they'd decided in their view, he should be satisfied by his life with them, and by the happiness of tutoring young Morgan? Alternately charmed and defer by the family, Pemberton is still left to choose between his connection to his young pupil and his need to produce a living.
