It officially started on February 28, 2006, whenever a couple of protesters from the local Six Countries reserve strolled onto Douglas Creek Estates, then a personal subdivision under development, and blocked personnel from entering. Over the course of the springtime and summer of this first year, the criminal activities of the occupiers included throwing a vehicle over an overpass; the using down of a hydro transformer, which induced a three-day blackout; the torching of a bridge; and the hijacking of a police vehicle. During the very most severe period, standard residents living nearby the site had to pass through indigenous barricades, show native-issued "passports", and were sometimes threatened with body queries and routinely subjected to threats. Much of this lawless carry out happened under the noses of the Ontario Provincial Police force, who, often against their own best instincts, stood by and viewed: They too have been intimidated. Arrests, where they were made, weren't made contemporaneously, but weeks or a few months later. The effect was to embolden the occupiers and render non-native citizens vulnerable and scared. Eighteen months after the occupation commenced, a home constructor known as Sam Gualtieri, working on the house he was supplying his girl as a wedding present, was attacked by protesters and beaten so badly he'll never fully recover from his traumas. The occupation is now in its fifth year. Throughout, Christie Blatchford has been watching, interviewing, and investigating with the tenacity that has made her both doyen of Canadian criminal offense reporters and a social commentator beloved on her behalf uncompromising sense of right and incorrect. In Helpless she instructs the full story for the first time - a tale that no area of the press or mass media in Canada has been prepared to handle with the unflinching objectivity that Christie Blatchford exhibits here. That is a e book whose many revelations, never before reported, will distress and appall. But the last word is going to the writer: "This e book is not about aboriginal land promises. The e book is not about the general removal of seven years of indigenous children using their company reserves and individuals - this is by dint of federal government plan or the misuse dished out to many of them at the personal schools into which they were arbitrarily located or the damaging results that haunt so many today. This e book is not about the dubious merits of the reserve system, which may better provide those who wish to see indigenous people are unsuccessful than those who want desperately for them to succeed. I do not at all make light of these issues, and they are one way or another in the backdrop of everything that happened in Caledonia. What Helpless is about is the inability of government to govern and to protect all of its citizens similarly."
