The summer after Abby's first season of college or university, eight months after doctors find a malignant tumor in her mother's brain, she and her parents vacation to northern New Hampshire. She spends the times in New Hampshire endeavoring to forget her mother, aided by the fresh, untroubled employees of the hotel, and the week becomes an awakening for her in lots of ways. Alternating between the perspectives of Elliott, Helen, and Abby, Hello Farewell is a luminous and romantic portrayal of a family group dealing with turmoil and acceptance.
