Kept penniless by the loss of life of his daddy, 19-year-old Nicholas Nickleby seeks help, together with his mom and sister, from Uncle Ralph Nickleby. The hard-hearted money lender calls for an instantaneous dislike to his nephew and eliminates the guy by securing him a teaching position at Dotheboys Hall, where the wicked Wackford Squeers presides. Horrified by the barbarity he perceives there, Nicholas defies Squeers and is pressured to flee. He's signed up with by Smike, who have been treated cruelly by Squeers, and the two become great friends. Nicholas joins a traveling theatre troupe and looks forward to great success, but with his mom and sister depending on him for his or her survival, he must find a way to make a reasonable living. His adventures are numerous and include a few of Dickens' most comic characters. Starring Anna Massey, Sophie Thompson, Ken Campbell, and Tom Baker, with Alex Jennings as the voice of Dickens.
