Peter Bell the Third, accidentally named from the name of the poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley, is called after to renew his old friendship with Rowland Usher, who was simply deliberately named after the protagonist of a tale by Edgar Allan Poe. Like a scientist, Peter is undoubtedly convinced, when he discovers Magdalen's "ghost" haunting the house, that the haunting can only be figurative and symbolic - but that will not make it any less meaningful, or difficult.
