Dane and Mandy, a popular magic work for 40 years, are tragically segregated by a car wreck that cases Mandy's life-or so everyone believes. Even while Dane mourns and attempts to restore his life without her, Mandy, supposedly inactive, awakes in the present as the19-year-old she is at 1970. Distraught and disoriented in what things to her is the near future, she is restricted to a mental ward until she discovers a marvelous ability to pass invisibly through time and space to flee. Alone in a odd world, she uses her inexplicable capabilities to eke out a living, undertaking magic on the pavements and in a quaint restaurant. Hoping to discover an exciting new skill, Dane ventures into the coffee shop and is transfixed by the magic he considers, illusions that even he, a seasoned professional, cannot describe. But more than anything, he's emotionally devastated by this teenager who has never found him, doesn't know him, is obviously not in love with him, but is in all respects similar to the young beauty he first found and married some 40 years earlier. They get started a furtive romantic relationship as coach and protégée, but even as Dane attempts to straighten out who she really is, and she attempts to understand why she actually is drawn to him, they may be viewed by secretive passions who not only possess the answers to Mandy's capabilities and misplacement with time but also the roguish capability to decide exactly what will become of her. Frank Peretti has built a rich, rewarding story of love and life, loss and restoration, full of twists and unknown. Exceptionally well written, Illusion will soon establish another Peretti basic.
