There's bad media and good news about the Cutter High School swim team. The bad media is that they don't really have a pool. The glad tidings are that only 1 of them can swim in any case. Several misfits brought jointly by T. J. Jones (the J is redundant), the Cutter All Night Mermen struggle to find their places in a university that does not have any place for the kids. T.J. is convinced a varsity letter jacket - exclusive, revered, the image (as far as T.J. is concerned) of all that is screwed up at Cutter High - will also be a powerful tool. He's right. He's also wrong. Still, it certainly is the quest that counts. Plus the bus on which the Mermen travel to swim fits soon becomes the space where they steadily allow themselves to talk, to fit, to grow. Alongside one another they'll combat for dignity in a global where tragedy and comedy dance hand and hand, in which a moment's inattention may bring lifelong heartache, and where true acceptance is the one prescription for what ails us.
