The Struggle of Antietam, (also called the Struggle of Sharpsburg), was fought on September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland, and Antietam Creek. The struggle was the culmination of Robert E. Lee's Maryland advertising campaign in which Lee attemptedto take the conflict to the North. The first major struggle in the American Civil War to occur on Union ground, it was and remains, the bloodiest single-day struggle in American record, claiming an astounding 23,000 casualties. The savage struggle was not a victory for either area, though turning back the Confederate invasion offered Abraham Lincoln the "victory" he required before issuing the Emancipation Proclamation. These are in depth, firsthand armed forces accounts of the logistics of the struggle, by both Union and Confederate men who fought it.
