Audie Award Nominee, Laughter, 2013The United States Constitution guaranteed a "More Perfect Union". From the shame no one bothered to create a more perfect Constitution - the one that didn't induce more than two generations of arguments about what the darn thing actually says. Until now. Perfection reaches hand. A fresh, improved Constitution is here. And you are about to listen to it. But first, some historical framework: Inside the 18th century, a lawyer known as James Madison gathered his friends in Philadelphia and over four long weeks, wrote four short pages: the Constitution of america of America. Pretty good. Inside the 19th century, a president known as Abraham Lincoln freed an entire folks from the flaws in that Constitution by putting your signature on the Emancipation Proclamation. Fairly impressive. And in the 20th century, a health care provider at the Bethesda Naval Clinic delivered your baby - but not only any baby. Because in the 21st century, that baby would become a man, that man would become a patriot, which patriot would rescue a country... by single-handedly rewriting that Constitution. Why? We think of our own Constitution as the painstakingly designed blueprint drawn up by, in Thomas Jefferson's words, an "assembly of demigods" who laid the building blocks for the sturdiest republic ever before created. The simple truth is, it was no blueprint in any way but an Etch-A-Sketch, a haphazard series of blunders, shaken clean and redrawn many times during a summer season of petty debates, drunken ramblings, and anxious compromise - all the the product of an "assembly of demigods" as a confederacy of dunces. No question George Washington wished it "had been made more perfect." No question Benjamin Franklin stomached it only "with all its faults." The Constitution they composed is a hot chaos. For starters, it doesn't speak about slavery, or democracy, or even Facebook; it performs favorites among the list of states; it offers typos, smudges, and misspellings; and its Preamble, its most well-known passage, was written by a guy with a peg leg. Which, if you believe about it, offers our Constitution barely a leg to stand on. [Pause for laughter.] Now stop laughing. Because you are about to listen to no mere audiobook, but the most crucial document of our own time. Its originator, Daily Show writer Kevin Bleyer, paid every price, bore every burden, and saved every receipt in his mission to make sure the salvation of our own nation's founding charter. He flew to Greece, the birthplace of democracy. He bused to Philly, the house of independence. He gone toe-to-toe (face-to-face) with Scalia. He added nightly confabs with James Madison to his daily consultations with Jon Stewart. He monitored down not just one but two John Hancocks - to make his version twice as public. He even browse the Constitution of america. So make yourselves, fellow patriots, for the most important literary event of the 21st, 20th, 19th, and latter part of the 18th generations. Me the People won't just form a "More Perfect Union". It will save America.
