In David Lodge's last novel, Feels..., the novelist Henry Adam was invisibly within quotation and allusion. In Writer, Author he is centre level, sometimes literally. The story begins in Dec 1915, with the dying publisher encircled by his family and servants, almost all of whom have private anxieties of their own, then loops back to the 1880s, to chart the span of Henry's 'middle years', focusing especially on his camaraderie with the genial Punch artist and illustrator, George Du Maurier. By the end of the ten years Henry is very seriously worried by the failure of his literature to 'sell', and decides to achieve popularity and lot of money as a playwright, at the same time that George Du Maurier, whose eyesight is failing, diversifies into writing books. The consequences, for both men, are astonishing, ironic, comic, and tragic.
