Fourteen-year-old Terry has parents who never paid him much attention. So when they both go away after one with their all-too-frequent quarrels, Terry isn't exactly eager for them to get back. On his own, he occupies himself by assembling an automobile kit which has been collecting particles in the storage area for a long time. When the car is finished, Terry is very happy to discover it actually runs. Though he doesn't know much about generating, he gets when driving and heads western, with the idea of browsing an uncle in Oregon. But Terry's plan requires a detour when he satisfies Shakespeare-quoting wanderer Waylon Jackson. The maturing Vietnam veterinarian has seen and done extraordinary things, and he is still hungry for more information. With Waylon as his copilot, Terry ends up in locales as assorted as a spiritual commune, a poker game in Deadwood, and Custer's Last Stand. It's an exciting and sometimes dangerous quest. On the way, he learns a lot about people, about America - and finally, about himself.
