Darrin's life has been going downhill ever since his girl Bridget walked out on him without a word of description six months in the past. Soon after getting rid of her, he lost his job, and his car, and finally his enthusiasm for life. He can't think about things getting worse - until he perceives Bridget again, for the first time since she strolled out, just moments before she leaps to her death from a bridge. In his pursuit to find out why Bridget took her own life, he encounters a depressive (and possibly immortal) cult head; a man with an automobile that can drive out of this world and into others; a beautiful psychotic with a stainless- shotgun; and a bridge that, maybe, brings about heaven. Darrin's trip leads him into a location called the Briarpatch, which is either the crawlspace of the world, or a series of ambitious building tasks forgotten by god, or a tangle of substitute universes, depending on who you ask. Someplace in that disorderly snarl of worlds, he expects to find Bridget again.
