Anra is a solitary. She was created without the power to mindspeak and cannot, like all of her fellows can, converse in unspoken thoughts. The people of the comet, the skydwellers, now source solitaries with implants that allow man-made mindspeaking. The solitaries are sequestered within a village eager to look after such children. Anra and her new brethren were regarded as the possible bridge between the people of Earth and the skydwellers however the distance may be too great because the people of Earth consider solitaries an abomination and the skydwellers as soulless. The solitaries are, instead, outcasts in two worlds, part of each but completely accepted in neither. Another comet gets into the machine, refusing to talk to Homesmind and talking with the people of Earth with the voices of their own inactive, seducing them into a distribution of their individual wills and attempting to lure them to oblivion.
