Though it is little known in this country, The Abdomen of Paris is considered one of Émile Zola's best novels. Set in the recently built food markets of Paris, it is a story of prosperity and poverty established against a sumptuous banquet of food and commerce. Having just escaped from jail after being wrongfully accused, young Florent finds Paris' grocery store, Les Halles, 50 % starved, ornamented by all he can't have, and indignant at his world, which he now understands to be unjust. He confirms that the city's working classes have been displaced to make way for bigger streets and bourgeois living quarters, so he settles in along with his brother's family. Slowly and gradually, he occupies with the local socialists, who tend to be at home in bars than on the revolutionary streets. Slowly, the ever-widening space between the wealthy and the indegent drags the city to the breaking point.
