Today, Grover Cleveland is chiefly known as the only president to own been elected to two non-consecutive conditions. However in his day, Cleveland was a renowned reformer: an adversary of political machines who joined pushes with Theodore Roosevelt to fight powerful party bosses, a moralist who vetoed charges he considered blatant raids on the Treasury, and a strenuous defender of the Monroe Doctrine who resisted American imperialism.
Cleveland's job in office was plagued by scandal and a gossip-mongering press. During his first presidential bid, he was persecuted for fathering a kid out of wedlock, a fee Cleveland readily admitted. At the age of forty-nine, he hitched his twenty-one-year-old ward, though following the nation's initial delight, she became typically the most popular first girl of her day.
On his deathbed, Cleveland would summarize his job simply: ''I have attempted so hard to do right.''
