In Neal Asher's Hilldiggers, throughout a battle between two planets in the same solar system - each occupied by adapted humans - what's regarded as a cosmic superstring is found out. The quads have meanwhile developed and are assuming positions of ability in the postwar culture. One of these will eventually gain control of the great Hilldiggers....
