In 1950, Katherine Proctor leaves Ireland for Barcelona, motivated to flee her family and become a painter. There she complies with Miguel, an anarchist veteran of the Spanish Civil Battle, and starts to build a life with him. But Katherine cannot get away her recent, as Michael Graves, a fellow Irish émigré in Spain, causes her to reexamine all her human relationships: to her fan, her art work, and the homeland she only thought she understood. The South is a novel of classic themes - of art work and exile, and of the apparently irreconcilable yearnings for love and flexibility - to which Colm Tóibín brings a fresh, passionate sensitivity.
