When Mr. Satterthwaite trips a new display at the Harchester Galleries, there exists one painting that bears an unusual likeness to a mysterious acquaintance of his, Mr. Quin. In a single vivid move he expenses the canvas at that moment, and in another invites the musician of "The Deceased Harlequin" to dine with him that nighttime, with a clear place at the stand arranged for Mr. Quin. Supper conversation soon transforms to the environment of "The Deceased Harlequin", the doomed and ghostly house Charnley, where many have perished under tragic circumstances. However when a new guest is announced, it isn't Mr. Quin but famed comic level celebrity Aspasia Glen, who demands that she be given that very painting. Then comes a frantic mobile call from Alix Charnley herself, and Alix gets the same request. What's the meaning of the painting, and did it shed any light upon the happenings at Charnley?
