Three men, Mihailo the porter, Nikandr the seafood vendor, and Stepan the coachman, sit around a table in the coach-house participating in a casino game of "kings" with Stepan's eight-year old grandson, Alyoshka. Whilst every greeting card player competitively attempts to succeed the coveted position of "king" in the overall game, a far more serious atmosphere casts a unhappy shadow in the estate in which the coach-house can be found. The man of the home, for whom the porter and coachman work, has attempted suicide, and he is based on the house house struggling somewhere between life and loss of life. Although the greeting card game had been light-hearted, the exit of the doctors, for whom the porter must open the door, transforms the greeting card players' conversation to the religious implications of suicide, which Nikandr relates in an identical experience he previously. The ghostly ramifications in Nikandr's tale frighten young Alyoshka, whose fright becomes worse when the men learn the destiny of their supervisor.
