The great virtue of this volume is the fact that it shows a lighter, comic aspect of Sade. He was a guy obsessed, like many great authors, and his obsessions remain present here: his hatred of all things pretentious, his loathing of a corrupt judicial system, his damning of hypocrisy and incorrect piety. One of the great anarchists ever, he was nevertheless definately not mad (as many pretended) and these works of fiction shed another light on this most feverish of intellects. But however heavy the topic, The Mystified Magistrate is infused with a light touch; it is revealing but never unpleasant.
