On Groundhog Day, secrets surface alongside a waterlogged corpse. The rural town of Balaclava greets Groundhog Day as a justification for one previous cold-weather fling. The students and faculty of the local agricultural college or university drink cocoa, put snowballs, and, when the heat range allows, glaciers skate. Oozak's Fish pond is not quite frozen this season, though, so that the Groundhog Day activities reach their peak, the students see someone bobbing through the glaciers. The drowning sufferer is long past help, though; he's terribly decomposed and dressed up in an old-fashioned frock cover with a heavy rock in each pocket. First on the arena is Peter Shandy, horticulturalist and, when the college or university requires it, detective. But fixing this 19th-century murder will take more than Shandy's knack for rutabagas. Counting on his wife's competence in local history, the professor dives into a gilded-age puzzle that cloaks secrets that continue to be effective enough to eliminate.
