Roaming India in 1939 and the first 1940s, two flawed but outstanding men latch onto each other with shocking implications as each practices an ill-fated search for "enlightenment." Moses, a Polish Jew, is fleeing both Nazis and his own failed relationship; Sahadeva, an itinerant Hindu monk, is trying to resolve his turmoil of religious opinion. Both men end up embroiled in hardship, shame, and chaos, stumbling into scandal and eventually tragedy. Because they clutch obsessively to observance and mysticism - Moses to early text messages of Jewish symbolism and prophesy, Sahadeva to Hindu rituals-they must confront the ultimate question of whether they are really seeking or merely hiding, and whether they can ever end the pattern of trouble they seem to bring upon themselves. To answer these questions they look first to one another, but must finally face their own shortcomings and concerns and stare into the face of "Adam Kadmon," the name the Kabbalah offers to the initial soul from which all men are descended. Will they ever be able to honestly start to see the damage they may have triggered and seek forgiveness-or will they continue working from themselves?
