Beirut is the 2009 2009 World Publication Capital, as chosen by UNESCO, with the guts of the festivities, in collaboration with the world-renowned Hay Event, is a competition to identify the 39 most promising young abilities in Arab books. The selection of the "Beirut 39" uses the success of a similar competition in the 2007 World Publication Capital, Bogot, celebrating achievements in Latin American books. This year, for the very first time, the winners - nominated by web publishers, literary critics, and readers across the Arab world and internationally, and selected by a panel of eminent Arab freelance writers, academics, and journalists - will be publicized jointly in a one-of-a-kind anthology. Edited by Samuel Shimon of Banipal mag, the collection will be publicized concurrently in Arabic and British across the world by Bloomsbury and Bloomsbury Qatar Basis Posting. Beirut 39 provides an important look at the Arab-speaking world today, through the eye of thirty-nine of its brightest young literary superstars.
