To put it simply, sociology is the study of groups of people. Sociologists want to know how social communities are formed and how they are retained. Sociologists are interested in studying the patterns of social groups of all sizes, which range from groups no more than families to the people as large as nations, or the populace of the world as a whole. Sociologists are interested in learning about all sorts of groups, including neighborhood gangs, worker's cooperatives, students, single working mothers, immigrants, and commercial executives. Any time that people get together to pursue common goals, whether for a single day or a lifetime, sociologists want to discover how individuals influence the actions of groups and how groups influence the actions of individuals. To carry out this, sociologists analyze the connections among members of communities as well as the collective actions of communities as they interact with other groups.
