This is a dark yet often funny book told from the point of view of a man who for the past two months is a patient at a New York City mental ward. Having endured a breakdown-due to his shattered marriage and an irrational concern with fading away as a human-he now discovers himself found between two worlds, neither which is a location of comfort or fulfillment: the world of the ward, where abnormality and an odd sort of liberty reign, and the exterior world, where convention and restrictive action rule. Finally on his way to becoming fairly "normal" again, he demands and is awarded a "solo pass", which allows him to leave the locked ward for many hours and go to the city, with the offer that he'll return to the hospital by night. As he prepares for his excursion, we get a picture of the ward he'll briefly leave behind-the staff and the patients, notably Mandy Reed, a schizophrenic and nymphomaniac who is becoming his closest friend there. Solo Pass is an unsettling satire that depicts, with inverted logic, the down sides of madness and normalcy.
