As I walked back through the City, my spirits was moderately raised. This appointment didn't displease me almost as much as i pretended. Like the majority of Romans I abhorred the considered sea duty, but this is one of the unusual occasions whenever i was getting excited about getting away from Rome...For years I put complained of the disorder of the City, and now that it was absent, I found that we missed it. All of the tranquility seemed unnatural. I did so not be expectant of it to last.- Decius Caecilius Metellus the Younger in SPQR IX: The Princess and the Pirates. His 2 yrs of aedileship over, Decius is ready for his next adventure. He would rather do anything than join the battle with Caesar in the dismal forests of Gaul, so he and his slave/protg Hermes end up on a mission to rid the Mediterranean of pirates. They set off with shoddy boats and sailors to the island of Cyprus, where a young Cleopatra is being. Between her impressive staff and the ex-pirate Ariston providing insider knowledge of that cutthroat profession, Decius feels he stands a good potential for bringing himself some glory. That would be too simple, though. The ruler of the island, Silvanus, is murdered in a most peculiar fashion and Decius, as a visitor in his home, has a sacred duty to find and punish the guilty get together. Because world relationships are already strained, he'd rather not think Cleopatra, heir to the Egyptian throne. But she has plenty enough of reasons to hate Rome and murder works in her family. Another visitor and think is Gabinius, who is in exile and may have easily given up devotion toward his good friend if it designed a quicker go back to Rome. For the time being, Decius has been humiliated in his pirate hunt, and as if this weren't enough, Aphrodite herself seeks Decius's help by showing up to him in a dream vision. As Decius investigates world trade, the island history, and the new kind of piracy plaguing the waters, he's finding relationships more menacing than he had ever imagined possible. In such a ninth book in the series, Roberts crafts another skillful mystery, this time fervently pulsing with the collision of Roman, Greek, and Egyptian passions.
