In the fall of 1978, on the 640-acre family deer-hunting ranch on Goat Pile in North California, several time north of Clear Lake over a four-wheel-drive road, an eleven-year-old boy runs hunting with three men: his daddy, grandfather, and a pal of his father's. Goat Pile is a dried up host to live oak and buck clean and poison oak with occasional rest from stands of ponderosa pine, white pine, and glucose pine, and a good swampy carry wallow. This is actually the place where all the family's remembrances and reviews and history are held. When the men arrive at the gate with their land, the daddy spots a poacher hunting illegally on his property. When he lets his eleven-year-old kid take a peek through the range of his rifle, the boy pulls the trigger. The men have difficulty over how to proceed with the useless man. Although struggle begins between the daddy and grandfather, it finally becomes a struggle between the grandfather and the boy. By the finish, nothing is as it appears. An exploration of our most primal urges, what guidelines hold us together, and that which you owe for what we've done, Goat Pile is a compulsive read.
