Three Enemies What makes so many souls deceived and plunged into destruction? Because they'll not think. Insufficient thought is one of the most frequent sources of human being misery. "My people do not consider." A thoughtless brain gets the characteristics of that broad road which causes destruction; while anxious inquiry, a solicitous matter, a serious factor about eternal things will be the first steps through sophistication towards that narrow way which leads unto life eternal. Give me, blessed Savior, a thoughtful, serious, reflecting brain; a deep eyesight into myself; a watchful vision over my religious enemies; an unshaken self confidence in you. From the term of God, I find that we now have three powerful enemies, which are incessantly laboring to ruin my soul. The foremost is the entire world. Being rescued from its snares, through the mighty power of God, it still seeks to influence my ruin: 1. By its smiles-hoping in doing so to succeed me back again, and allure my poor, vain heart by its smooth, seductive influence. That is a most dangerous temptation, and few withstand its pressure. 2. By its frowns - pondering in doing so to terrify my heart and soul, and cause me to renounce the beliefs of Jesus, somewhat than suffer from affliction with the people of God for a season. Lord, strengthen my beliefs, and equip me for the fight. 3. By putting before my sight its riches, honors, and pleasures to captivate my affections, and wean me from the unseen glories of a future world. Fatal temptation! "Demas has forsaken me," said Paul, "having treasured this present time world." To withdraw the affections from the items of energy; to remain loosely even to lawful enjoyments; and wait with anxious desire for the signal of departure to a better world; is what unassisted nature can't ever perform: yet genuine faith comprises in this happy mind-set. Lord, help me. Without you, I can do little or nothing; but, Oh! Glorious triumph, I can do everything through Christ who strengthens me.
