Two typical noir novellas about young men who find treacherous careers during the Great Depression. In "Hades", Alexander Titus, a past Olympic decathlon celebrity, involves Hollywood looking for work. He and his friend Haw Gooch are right down to their last dollar when they find careers as bodyguards for erratic film designer Roger Quinlan. Quinlan seems quite paranoid, professing that he's being stalked by way of a demon and that he found Hades in a cavern in New Mexico. The storyplot sounds crazy, however when Titus is framed for murder, he realizes Quinlan's alleged hell might be the main one place where he can also find the reality. In "Hocus Pocus", two penniless traveling magicians react to an ad for a mind reader. A psychology professor hires those to infiltrate several evangelists who combine mind reading to their preaching. Cal "Marvelous" Merton and his assistant, Thoughts Daly, will research the evangelists' methods and survey back on whether their mind reading is genuine. But as Merton and Daly sign up for the brand new Apostles, air of danger is palpable, and questions come up about their workplace and just what they're investigating.
