When Dido Hoare, antiquarian bookseller and solitary mother, receives a frantic call for help in the middle of the night time, she rushes to her good friend (and nanny's) part. Unaware that any damage has come to Frank, the women go about clearing up the apartment. Two men posing as police officers show up and begin asking questions. Phyllis identifies one of the men from the night time before and realizes that they are again looking for whatever these were after. Clearly the situation is more than Dido are designed for, but she can't rip herself away-not even though her father, Barnabas, and an inspector, Paul Grant, alert her how much danger she is in.
