Henrietta Von Harmon works as a 26 young lady at a place pub on Chicago's northwest aspect. It's 1935, but things still aren't finding out about because the big crash and her father's succeeding suicide, departing Henrietta to look after her antagonistic mom and young siblings. Henrietta is eventually persuaded to have a job as a taxi dancer at a local boogie hall - and when she's beginning to enjoy herself, the ground matron arises dead. When aloof Inspector Clive Howard appears on the picture, Henrietta agrees to visit undercover for him - and is plunged into Chicago's grittier underworld. In the mean time, she's still occupied playing mom hen to her young siblings, as well concerning pesky neighborhood boy Stanley, who is convinced himself in love with her and continues popping up in the most unlikely places, determined to keep Henrietta safe - even from the Inspector, if need be. Despite his attempts, however, and his penchant for ruining the Inspector's exploration, the lovely Henrietta and the impenetrable Inspector find themselves drawn to each other generally in most unsuitable ways.
