The legendary towns of Turkestan - Merv, Khiva, Bokhara and Samarkand - have long exerted an enchanting fascination upon American travellers. During the last century, men of many nationalities have enjoyed what they and their contemporaries have called "THE FANTASTIC Game" - going throughout Central Asia. The author revives memories of the brokers and travellers - public and unofficial, armed service and civilian - who've frequented the Khanates of Turkestan, relating their ventures and wanting to recreate the atmosphere and flavour of the spot. Very well written, Fitzroy Maclean captures a way of life that is fast disappearing. Sir Fitzroy Hew Royle Maclean of Dunconnel, 1st Baronet KT CBE (1911-1996) was a Scottish soldier, article writer and politician. He was a Unionist MP from 1959 to 1974 and was one of few people who joined World Conflict II as a private and remaining having risen to the list of Brigadier. Maclean composed several books, including Eastern Techniques, in which he recounted three incredible series of ventures: going, often incognito, in Soviet Central Asia; struggling with in the American Desert Campaign, where he specialized in commando raids behind opponent lines; and living abrasive with Tito and his Yugoslav Partisans. It has been speculated that Ian Fleming used Maclean as one of his inspirations for Wayne Bond.
