Robert Aickman, the supreme expert of the supernatural, includes eight stories where weird things happen that the reader struggles to predict. His heroes are often depressed and middle-aged, but all have a similar thing in common: they are brought to the brink of abyss that shows how terrifyingly fragile our little bit of mind actually is. The Unsettled Particles, THE HOME of the Russians, No Stronger Than a Blossom, The Cicerones and Ravissante first came out in the Sub Rosa collection in 1968, however the stories were publicized together as The Unsettled Particles in 1990. Aickman received the United kingdom Fantasy Award in 1981 for The Staining, which first came out in the anthology New Terrors (1980), as well as the posthumous assortment of Aickman's short experiences, Night Voices (1985).
