In this abnormal book, Benstead explains to the way the men of the English Isles have matched up their skill and courage resistant to the menace of the encompassing sea. The fishermen, life-boatmen, the smugglers and hovellers, the men of the Royal Navy and the Product owner Service, and the pilots of Trinity House - these are the stars in a drama of almost everyday heroism. It is through their eye that people see their triumphs and disasters, and the variety of activities. The Armada gales that never blew: the tragedy and glory of the old collier brigs; the place of Scapa Flow inside our island record; the destiny of the sole lighthouse ever built on the Goodwins; what happened at Jutland; what happened whenever a future Ruler of Great britain was wrecked on the Leman shoal; when the captain of the Vryheid refused to have a pilot; whenever a get together of emigrants lit a hearth in a sailing ship's ventilator in order to boil a kettle; so when three young men and a rising lady-novelist disguised themselves as Abyssinian princes and inspected England's latest & most top secret battleship - from these arbitrary incidents and subject areas may be seen the scope of your narrative that does not have little or nothing in entertainment and it is often deeply moving. The story of the shallows unfolds as a story of men unceasingly at warfare with waters where for centuries they have found their sustenance and made a highway for business. It is a well-timed reminder of the heritage. Mr. C. R. Benstead, a graduate of Cambridge University or college, has been both soldier and sailor. Inside the First World Warfare he was talked about in despatches after the controversial Passchendaele battle, in 1917, and received the Military Combination in the fighting near Amiens that adopted the fantastic German offensive in 1918. His publication Retreat, written against the background of the ill-fated British Fifth Army, created worldwide interest. At the outbreak of the Second World Warfare he was Meteorological Officer of the aeroplanes carrier Furious, in which he extended to provide for over 2 yrs and he finished the warfare on the personnel of the Commander-in-Chief, British Pacific Fleet. After retiring from the Navy, he was, at one time, Senior Proctor of the University or college.
