Surprise Jameson (1891-1986) was created to a North Yorkshire category of shipbuilders. Jameson's fiery mom, who bore three girls, encouraged Surprise (christened Margaret Surprise) to pursue an educational education. After being taught privately with Scarborough municipal college she received one of three state scholarships which enabled her to read English Books at Leeds School. She then went on to complete an MA in Western european theatre at King's College London. During her career Jameson had written 45 novels, numerous pamphlets, essays, and reviews, in order to earn cash. Her personal life experienced, and her first matrimony to schoolmaster Charles Douglas Clarke was an unsatisfied one. Once they divorced in 1925, Jameson went on to marry Guy Chapman, a fellow writer, and remained with him despite her clear rejection of normal domestic life. Surprise Jameson was always politically lively, helping to submit a Marxist journal in the British isles section of the International Union of Revolutionary Freelance writers in 1934 and participating anti-fascist rallies.
