In the near future, Jon Grebbel will come on the colony world of Janus, and confirms himself mysteriously without ram of his life on the planet. It appears that the long trip has brought on severe memory reduction in many of Janus's colonists. While Grebbel needs to begin his new life, he also needs his memory again, and starts off treatments to revive his past. But they only leave him irritated and disturbed and he commences to suspect the glimpses of days gone by the treatments reveal. Grebbel fulfills Elinda, an earlier arrival, whose enthusiast, Barbara, vanished and then was found lying in the woods, evidently brain-damaged. Elinda in addition has lost her stories of Globe, but unlike him she has abandoned your time and effort to recover them. Now their conference brings each of them a view of an event they shared again on Earth. Looking into Barbara's fate and their own, the two find their love and their seek out justice turning toward bitter self-discovery and revenge, even as they begin to uncover the darkness at the heart with their world.
