Uncle Edward was surprised. Needless to say he remembered! He knew about Person Fawkes and his gang of violent and dangerous scammers. Yet it was to Uncle Edward that point played the trick, carrying him back to the comings and goings of Catesby, Person Fawkes (alias Mr Johnson), and the other conspirators. Viewing the events near, Uncle Edward's convictions were shaken: the men he had thought hard-hearted and violent scammers were perhaps in the end honest men powered to desperation by oppression and persecution. For Dick the knowledge of heading back in time was different: a few, dispersed facts learnt at school had taken on a fresh, exciting truth as he observed the perilous risks run by Person Fawkes and his friends in a great cause. To his surprise too, he learnt that he himself was a descendant of one of the members in that famous episode: indeed it almost looked like as though for an instant of your time Dick was himself that very person.
