In SC, specifically in Charles Town, in January 1775 arrangements for warfare are well underway, Peggy Monaghan's two brothers drill with the militia, and Peggy's two best friends have much to discuss over tea, except when Peggy is likely to stay a few months each year on her father's indigo plantation. As warfare clouds gather, a number of the prosperous young South Carolinians delivered abroad for his or her education have gone off swashbuckling through society in London and Edinburgh and are arriving home to become listed on the Patriot cause. Included in this is Ned Forsythe, the youngest brother of Peggy's close friend Anne, but, having been appreciated to marry in Great britain, he almost simultaneously goes north to become listed on the Continental Army and break free the wagging tongues of Charles Town. An impending assault by United kingdom warships in early on summer months of 1776 brings him back again, and, undoubtedly he and Peggy fall season in love in a world complicated by two more United kingdom attacks, the brutal United kingdom occupation, and the flat iron clad code of honor that placed sway in the society of the 18th century.
