Originally posted as "A Marriage Tragedy" in Harper's New Regular monthly Magazine, Feb 1858. William, the narrator and faithful servant to wealthy widow Mrs. Norcross tells the story of her disappointed second relationship to Wayne Smith. A detective lawyer's clerk, Mr. Dark, both confirms Smith's bigamous remarriage and, pursuing his disappearance, shows Mrs. Norcross and William innocent of murder. Dark also recovers jewellery stolen by the maidservant and establishes her guilt. William's amiable romantic relationship with the experienced detective foreshadows that between Betteredge and Cuff in The Moonstone (1868). William Wilkie Collins (1824 - 1889) was a very popular Victorian novelist and a close friend and collaborator of Charles Dickens. Collins was a prolific article writer, submitting not only novels, but many plays, short stories, and works of nonfiction. The boy of an effective landscape artist, Collins developed an early fascination with storytelling to disarm bullies at boarding college. As a kid, Collins lived and journeyed throughout Europe, and please his dad, became an attorney. Collins sold his first brief account at 19, his first book at 24. He had a very successful job as a grasp of suspense with a definite narrative voice, filled up with communal commentary. Wilkie Collins never actually used laws, but his knowledge profoundly impacted his writing and he's considered one of the godfathers of the detective book.
