In The Man UP AGAINST THE Sky, Edwin Arlington Robinson reveals us with a gallery of characters attracted from the roadways, homes and gathering places of Tilbury Town, his imaginary Northeastern dwelling place. A mystical compelling stranger, a woman living on charity, a welcoming home - this and other portraits give us a persuasive and perceptive view of the range of human identity and feeling. As though to broaden the horizons of Tilbury Town, he also imagines folks from faraway times and places. We hear Ben Jonson speculating about Shakespeare; we see Galahad at this time of taking his seats at the Round Desk, and Cassandra in her later years. At the end of the e book, he sums them all up in the great and troubling poem that gives the title to the e book, a portrait of a man seen against a fiery sky, a lonesome man, unidentified, yet representative of most mankind and of the real human struggle to achieve - or, at the minimum, continue the have difficulty.
