Praised by critics for his clean prose style, characterisation, and the strong sense of put in place his novels, Philip Maitland Hubbard was born in Reading, Berkshire, and raised in the Route Islands. He was educated at Oxford, where he received the Newdigate Reward for English verse in 1933. From 1934 until its disbandment in 1947 he offered with the Indian Civil service, then for the British Council, before retiring to work as a freelance copy writer. He added to lots of magazines, including Punch, and had written 16 novels for adults and two children's literature. He resided in Dorset and Scotland, and a lot of his novels bring on his involvement in and knowledge of rural pursuits and folk religion.
