Released from jail after serving a phrase for manslaughter, Curtis determines to drive through the West Country, returning by way of a roundabout path to the scene of the crime that arrived him in jail. Praised by critics for his clean prose style, characterisation and the strong sense of put in place his books, Philip Maitland Hubbard was created in Reading, Berkshire and brought up in the Route Islands. He was educated at Oxford, where he received the Newdigate Reward for English verse in 1933. From 1934 until its disbandment in 1947 he dished up with the Indian Civil service, then for the British Council, before retiring to work as a freelance writer. He added to a number of magazines, including Punch, and wrote 16 books for adults and two children's books. He resided in Dorset and Scotland, and a lot of his novels draw on his fascination with and understanding of rural pursuits and folk religious beliefs.
