Captain Alexei Korolev has nothing at all to complain about. He has his own room in an apartment, a job in the police force that sets food up for grabs, and his good health. In Moscow in 1937, that's much more than most people have to be thankful for. But for the first time in a long time, Korolev is going to be truly happy: his child Yuri is coming to go to for a whole week. Soon after Yuri's entrance, however, Korolev receives an urgent call from his boss - it appears an important man has been murdered, and Korolev is the only detective they're prepared to assign to this sensitive case. Actually, Korolev realizes almost immediately that the layers of awareness and secrecy adjoining this case considerably go over his pay quality. And the consequences of interfering with a case tied to State Security or the NKVD can be severe - you might lose your job, if you're blessed. All of your family might die if you're not. Korolev is all of a sudden faced with a lot more than just exploring a murderer's personality; he must decide how far he'll go to see justice served... and what he's prepared to do to protect his family.
