In Rocket Research, Jay Lake's first novel, Vernon Dunham's good friend Floyd Bellamy has went back to Augusta, Kansas after serving in World War II, but he hasn't come back empty-handed: he's stolen a super-secret airplane right from under the Germans. Vernon doesn't think it's your typical run-of-the-mill aircraft. To begin with, it has been buried under the Arctic ice for more than 100 years. When it actually begins talking to him, he realizes it doesn't belong in Kansas-or everywhere on Earth. The issue is, a great deal of folks know about the dispatch and are out to obtain it, including the Nazis, the U.S. Army-and that's just for starters. Vernon must work out how to communicate with the dispatch and unravel its secrets before everyone catches up with him. If he ends up lifeless, and the dispatch falls in to the wrong hands, it won't have a rocket scientist to forecast the fate of humanity.
