When Ashley Dark brown was five yrs . old, her parents left her in the care of her grandma, though her mother promised to return for her. At 14, Ashley is still coping with her grandmother in Highland, a city on the outskirts of Maryville, a location known as the "ghetto". Ashley has shadowy recollections of her mother taking her to her favorite place, the collection. Reading a good booklet allows Ashley to flee her poverty-and-crime-infested community. One evening after hearing the Mayor's press meeting, Ashley discovers that the Mayor is removing the community collection. In spite of being put on punishment for weekly by her grandma for defending herself from the institution bullies, Ashley seems it is worth the chance to sneak out of her apartment to mail a letter she's written to the Mayor about keeping the collection open. Each day homeless people address her and beg for something to eat or for the money. The most typical requests come from two disheveled individuals Ashley has nicknamed "Orphan Annie" and the "business-man bum". As if escaping the homeless people isn't enough, there are always a bunch of bullies who harass Ashley. 1 day, the bullies run after her into an alley. They induce her to the ground and Ashley is frightened of what could have occurred next. This is actually the onetime Ashley wished she possessed paid attention to her grandma.
