Car detective Jack Colby is asked by the "Mad Major" to find one of the initial five autos that got part in the Peking to Paris rally of 1907. The Major and two fellow trustees plan to rerun the rally for charity - only this time in Kent with cities and villages on the road transforming themselves into their Chinese counterparts. He is motivated to find one of the two original De Dion Bouton rivals, which is rumoured to be somewhere in Kent. Jack accepts the challenge, but he is soon plunged into some other and far more dangerous investigation.
