The spaceship, Questor, is found in an unfamiliar sensation which results in the vessel being transferred definately not home. Frantically low on products, they locate a system with two inhabited worlds where the crew expects to find some assistance. Captain Sullivan visits the first world, Midea, while sending a tiny expedition to the second. By the time Jon and Manny occur, they've discovered the second planet is named Rhiava. However, when wanting to land they find the planet is circled by an energy field which in turn causes their vessel to crash.Rescued and befriended by Rhiava, Jon and Manny learn the reality about the oppression of the Mideans. The Rhiava aren't the simple people they first seem, having strong mental skills they call Presents. Helping the Rhiava leader, a young woman called Triena, to attain security, Jon and Manny travel over the planet's surface. Through the dangerous journey Jon and Triena become close and she actually is devastated when he is captured and tortured by Midean makes. Jon refuses to disclose anything and though he is finally rescued with help from Triena's Gift, he has been hardened by his ordeal. The Questor eventually finds Rhiava having learned the reality about the Mideans. Understanding that if they assist the Rhiava resistant to the Mideans and succeed they will obtain all the products they need, Captain Sullivan chooses to help. Triena discloses a few of her people's secrets to the Questor crew and alongside one another they plan an assault on the Midean platform.Now only one question remains - who'll survive the battle?
