Relying on most important sources-oral background interviews, personal memoirs, magazine articles, official documents, diaries, and characters - E.R. Milner cuts through misconception and legend to create this startling family portrait of the true Bonnie and Clyde. In his prologue, Milner presents Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, displaying them as they drive along a rural Louisiana lane toward the ambush that would put a dramatic end with their turbulent lives of offense. Milner then traces their backgrounds, noting the happenings that bring both outlaws alongside one another. The ensuing activities of Bonnie and Clyde highlighted gun battles, small escapes and captures, frequent goes, and, of necessity, several shifts in workers over a brief period of time. It was a life of wild action, betrayal, and sometimes even gallantry. Inside the abstract, an aura of relationship ornamented this violent pair. Even though the mythology bordering Bonnie and Clyde is billed with play and fascination, Milner unveils the reality behind the bloody legend, carefully gleaning materials from obscure locally publicized accounts, previously untapped court public records, and archived but unpublished dental background accounts from some 60 patients, neighbors, family members, and police who had been involved in the exploits of the infamous duo. And the reality proves to be sufficiently enjoyable. Romance apart, the Barrow gang carved a grisly swath through Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri. Milner traces this violent path until 23 May 1934, when Bonnie and Clyde pass away in an ambush. Even inactive, they sketch crowds and are buried in a circus-like atmosphere. In fatality they continue to intrigue us in ways few criminals possessed before or have since.
